Furthermore, the medium of my project is in the form of a review, which allows me to communicate what the message is to my audience. The genre of my project is informational/persuasive, as I teach my audience more about how Westerns are being presented on screen today compared to the past, and how it differs from other Western films or clichés they may have heard. I took the part of a credited film reviewer for the New York Times Vulture Magazine, and spoke of both the positive and negative sides of the film. The movie, The Power of the Dog, has already won numerous awards and received several nominations for its display. I then compared characteristics of the traditional Western aspect to Neo-Westerns, which is a more modern and late-contemporary adapted version of a Western, still falling in the same category. For my RIP Project, I reviewed the film and informed my audience of the stereotypes regularly associated within the Western genre. Overall, the film had gone by equitably quickly, however, I did have a hard and difficult time attempting to understand some parts of it. I briefly read the overview of the film and pressed play. As I scrolled through Netflix one Saturday night, there it was, a hauntingly beautiful image of the backside of a certain cowboy, only able to see the bottom half of his face, an ominous expression plastered all over him, and holding some type of rope in his hands. Choosing to write about the film, The Power of the Dog, was a fairly easy choice.
